Who is The Migraine Dietitian? (Kelli Yates)
Hey! I’m Kelli Yates, a functional dietitian specializing in migraine—but before I became The Migraine Dietitian, I was just like you.
I’ve had migraine for most of my life (just lucky, I guess!), and for years, my approach was the same as many others: take ibuprofen, push through, and hope for the best.
Until one day, that stopped working.
My Journey with Migraine & Chronic Symptoms
In my early twenties, my health completely crashed.
👉 Daily migraine attacks
👉 Constant stomach pain & bloating—no matter what I ate
👉 Depression & fatigue that made even basic tasks exhausting
👉 Muscle & joint pain that left me feeling decades older than I was
I bounced between doctors, desperate for answers, but I was repeatedly brushed off. Even a Naturopath—who handed me a list of 20 different supplements—left me feeling worse. I was stuck.
So, like many people with chronic health issues, I turned to Google.
Falling Into the “Healing Diet” Trap
I fell down a rabbit hole of restrictive diets that promised to fix everything. AIP, Paleo, Whole30, Keto—you name it, I tried it.
At first, it felt empowering. The science of nutrition fascinated me, and the wellness space seemed so much more promising than the doctors who had dismissed me.
But what started as an attempt to heal turned into something damaging.
🚨 My diet became more and more restrictive.
🚨 I feared “unsafe” foods.
🚨 I developed an eating disorder—obsessed with eating “the right way” but stuck in a cycle of bingeing and guilt.
I felt like a failure. Why wasn’t this working? Why was I still sick?
(Spoiler: It wasn’t my fault. And it’s not yours either.)
How I Found a Better Way
Even though I was struggling, my fascination with nutrition never faded. I went back to school to become a registered dietitian, hoping to find real answers—for myself and for others.
And through both education and therapy, I finally saw the truth:
❌ Long-term restrictive diets weren’t the solution.
❌ Migraine wasn’t just about food triggers.
❌ Ibuprofen wasn’t fixing anything—it had actually given me a stomach ulcer.
I started researching migraine differently—not as an isolated condition, but as a whole-body issue. And I was blown away by what I found.
The Approach That Changed Everything
Instead of focusing on restriction and elimination, I built a new method:
✅ A whole-body approach that considers gut health, hormones, deficiencies, and the nervous system.
✅ A focus on nourishment, not fear-based food rules.
✅ A strategy that honors both conventional & functional medicine.
Using this approach, I went from daily intractable migraine attacks to episodic migraine for the first time since childhood.
No more suffering. No more restrictive diets. Just real, evidence-based strategies that actually work.
Why I Created Raise Your Threshold
I created Raise Your Threshold because I know exactly how it feels to be lost in the noise of migraine advice that doesn’t actually help.
I’ve lived the frustration of:
❌ Doctors who don’t take you seriously.
❌ Diets that leave you exhausted and afraid of food.
❌ Medications that help a little—but not enough.
I never want anyone else to go through what I did.
That’s why RYT exists: to help you build a body that can handle more—without extreme diets, fear, or frustration.
